Measuring Data Governance

The concept of data maturity is quite simple really, its a measurement of how successful your data governance program is, and if conducted in an open manner can provide valuable feedback on areas of improvement. Its used to visualise improvement over time, most reviews in my experience are conducted annually.

Unlike what most consultants will tell you, there is no one size fits all model which can be dug out and applied to any business, your objectives will be different and therefore so will be your evaluation, now like most good recipes there are a few common ingredients that can be reused across assessments, but reader be warned it doesn’t mean I recommend to copy and paste them verbatim as you may find specific measurements in my examples out date or simply don’t fit your program.

The below is a set of generic examples which can potentially be reused across assessments, later I will give some examples from retail organisations where they maybe more targeted to the program, share a couple of examples on how you can visualise the examples in an assessment and finally discuss who/how the an assessment maybe conducted.

Vision:

V1: Data governance vision is defined and aligns to the organisations goals.
V2: Data governance framework defined, including operating model.
V3: Data governance roadmap created and socialised with regular updates.
V4: Annual maturity review conducted.
